Which way the clutch plate goes into your Leyland tractor

Which way the clutch plate goes into your Leyland tractor

This is a question that we are always being asked. Which way does the clutch plate go into the housing on my Leyland tractor? It is a good question as putting it in the incorrect way can lead to the clutch failing to clear.

11” dual clutch

So here I am going to specifically talk about the 11” dual clutch unit which is fitted into tractors from the Nuffield 3DL, through the Leyland middleweight range, such as the Leyland 270 or Leyland 272 models of tractors and also the Golden Harvest Marshall range up to the Marshall 802 and 804 tractors, where an 11” dual clutch unit is fitted. This clutch is the most common clutch that we sell and therefore the one that we get asked about most often.

For the Marshall range of tractors, there is also an option of a 12” clutch, which is effectively the 11” clutch housing that has had an extra ½” each side machines out. We find that as a result of this the 11” clutch unit, part number 37H2447/E, is actually a stronger clutch unit, and we recommend under a lot of cases to put this 11” clutch back in to the Marshall tractors.

This is for the 11” clutch plate, part number ATJ5479.

The easy way to remember which way the clutch plate is fitted is that the FLAT side goes to the FLYwheel. This means that the side with the boss on goes into the clutch cover.

While both sides of the Leyland clutch plate have a boss that sticks out, which has the splines in it, one side has the back of the rivets and the other side has the boss that the rivets go through. This is where the flat side comes from. You can see easily in the pictures below.

It is very easy to get confused between these two as it is a quite subtle difference between the boss and the flat side of the clutch plate, but I hope that these pictures help.
