Marshall 704 Hydraulics

The hydraulic system in your tractor must be in top condition for the reliable operation and high performance of your Marshall 704 tractor. If you need your Marshall 704 tractor to work around the farm, or on the saw-bench or in the forest the chances are that you will be using the hydraulic system on your tractor to pull a trailer, lift an implement or to run some sort of implement for example a log-splitter off the hydraulic system. Therefore, you rely on this system almost as much as your engine, so why not show it some care and attention. We all know that these Leyland and Marshall tractors are classics now and therefore they have done a lot of hours work now, so it is not surprising that things are little bit worn here and there. Depending on where your hydraulic system problem manifests itself, it can be either a slow decline in the hydraulic pressure, or you can see a sudden total failure of the hydraulics to work. It may be that the tractor can tip a trailer but cannot lift the arms – it is all due to the mechanical advantage of where the pivot points are. If you are unsure if it is a problem with the hydraulic pump or a problem elsewhere there are two things that you can do first – change the filters and get a hydraulic pressure reading from the pump. To get a hydraulic pressure reading you can use a hydraulic pressure gauge and plug this into the auxillary port and see what reading you get. This is really useful when diagnosing problem with the hydraulic system. Another thing you can do is to change the filters on the backend of the tractor. Thers is a hydraulic suction filter and a high pressure filter, both of which are available on these pages.
There are a lot of hydraulic components listed on this page of the website, all of which will fit your Marshall 704 or your Leyland 704 tractor. If you have a Leyland 704 tractor then you need to be careful as these early cross-over models have a different pump set-up with the slightly different hydraulic pump coupling linked to the hydraulic pump with the splined input shaft. The later Marshall 704 models had a different rubber pump coupling and a hydraulic pump with a tapered input shaft with a key. If you are unsure what you need then we are here to help. We are real people at the end of the phone or at the end of an email and we really want to make sure that what you get is what you need – it is much easier for both of us if we get it right first time.
